“NET ZERO is our greatest chance for a sustainable future”

What is NET ZERO and how do we get there?

NET ZERO emissions will be achieved when all GHG emissions released by humans are counterbalanced by removing GHGs from the atmosphere in a process known as carbon removal. Reaching NET ZERO requires us to do 2 things:

  1. Reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, as quickly as possible, phasing out coal and fossil fuel burning, investing in clean energy, shifting to electric vehicles, protecting forests and reducing food loss and waste.  This will all reduce our carbon footprint.
  2. We need to pull just as much carbon out of the atmosphere as we pump into it.  This can be done by planting trees (which absorb carbon into their trunks, limbs and roots) and deploying emerging technologies, such as direct air capture, which take carbon out of the air and stores it underground.

Most countries around the world have already agreed to reach NET ZERO emissions by 2050, some even aiming to do so be 2030.

  • For every molecule of greenhouse gas we put into the air, we take one out – leaving our net emissions zero.

  • Reduce emissions

  • Remove emissions

  • Use less, more efficiently

  • Create green, clean technology for the future

  • Replace ALL greenhouse gas emitting activities with clean ones

What is the RACE to ZERO?

Race To Zero is a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, investors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.

It mobilizes a coalition of leading net zero initiatives, representing 733 cities, 31 regions, 3,067 businesses, 173 of the biggest investors, and 622 Higher Education Institutions. These ‘real economy’ actors join 120 countries in the largest ever alliance committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest. Collectively these actors now cover nearly 25% global CO2 emissions and over 50% GDP.

Led by the High-Level Climate Champions for Climate Action – Nigel Topping and Gonzalo Muñoz– Race To Zero mobilizes actors outside of national governments to join the Climate Ambition Alliance, which was launched at the UNSG’s Climate Action Summit 2019 by the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera.

The objective is to build momentum around the shift to a decarbonized economy ahead of COP26, where governments must strengthen their contributions to the Paris Agreement. This will send governments a resounding signal that business, cities, regions and investors are united in meeting the Paris goals and creating a more inclusive and resilient economy.
